What's a better market for starting a web and mobile app development and marketing firm, San Francisco or Chicago?

  • Or to rephase the question, is it better to be a small fish in a big pond (SF) or a big fish in a small pond (Chicago)?  And how should I measure the pond--in terms of VC, number of tech companies, and hype (SF wins), or total amount of people and size of the economic base (Chicago wins)?  Or is it possible to do it all remotely? The idea is to be more than just another Rails and iOS shop.  The strategy is to do full-service digital product development, management, and marketing.  A client comes to us with an idea for expanding their business using a web/mobile app, we create a plan for product development as well as business models, revenue projections, marketing research, product validation, and long-term infrastructure planning.

    Chicago is booming with tech startups these days. Not only is the city attracting top entrepreneurial talent, but there is a large community of established companies working synergistically with the younger companies to create a really innovative space. Not to mention it is a tad bit more affordable to live in Chicago and it is a bigger city!

What type of tech startup is it? Ed tech - go to Boston. Fashion startup - NY or LA. Commerce - Seattle. Buying and selling mineral rights - anywhere in the Midwest. Corporate analytics - Dallas or Houston. It all depends.

San Francisco, because its a global startup hub and its near to silicon valley, moreover the startup culture on SF is more mature as compared to chicago
