Where can I learn Telugu?

What is some good advice for a beginner that wants to learn Telugu?

  • I am a resident of Hyderabad since 5 years but have been mostly surrounded by Hindi speaking people, so couldn't learn spoken Telugu so well. I know how to read and write but I don't understand is very well nor can I speak in it fluently. I really want to learn it in order to be able to communicate with so many people whose mother-tongue is Telugu.

  • Answer:

I am a telugu guy living in bangalore. Like you, I wanted to learn the local language. I did the following which gave me OK results. 1. Listened to Kannada radio channels in my car. (For you, I suggest Hyderabad's Radio mirchi, they are the wittiest.) 2. Insisted on talking to the vegetable wala, auto drivers, and grocers in Kannada. 3. Watched kannada remakes of films I know with English subtitles so I know the context and the meaning. Still, I wasn't happy with my progress, so I married a kannadiga. That did the trick and I am now able to converse pretty fluently. Hope this helps.

This should be fun! Hang out. As goes with any other local language, spend time with those who speak the language. Try following Telugu pop culture (movies, short films that are abundant online, memes, and the like), preferably in the company of these friends. Let them know about your will and see where it goes. Familiarize further. A bunch of witty Telugu communities are out there on the social media. http://gultrage.tumblr.com/, https://www.facebook.com/Naku.koncham.mental?fref=ts are some I know. Should fuel some conversations with your Telugu pals. Travel. You could get away to places in the state where people primarily speak this language and try communicating with them. Express. As says, be confident and keep going. Simple. If you face criticism, lite theesko! If texting/posting/blogging is your thing, start by using Telugu words and phrases wherever relevant. Your ability to read the language is an upside. I wish you happy discoveries!

I asked , my Marathi friend this question. He has been in Hyderabad for 4 years, and he learned to speak Telugu very well. He says to: Surround yourself with Telugu-speaking people instead. Watch Telugu movies with subtitles and say the dialogues in them out loud. Develop your own logic for the language instead of learning the grammar from scratch.
