What are credits used for on Facebook?

Can Facebook Credits be used to purchase real world goods (not just virtual goods)? If not, what is the barrier to implementation, and when might this feature be enabled/available?

  • Answer:

§ 2.6 You may not accept Credits as payment for tangible goods. https://developers.facebook.com/policy/credits/ The barrier is regulatory compliance with banking, e-money, money transmission, money laundering, anti-terrorism and related laws; as a provider of virtual credits, you want to avoid to be regulated by any of these because they're expensive and a real burden for your organization, so you rule them out as much as you can in your terms of service.

According to this (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/23/technology/23facebook.html) NYTimes article, Facebook is eventually planning to enable the use of credits for real world goods. As Facebook Deals (http://www.facebook.com/deals/business/) are also scheduled to be purchasable using Facebook Credits, the article seems genuine.
