Where is a website where I can find demographic data. For the US?

Where can I find data or research showing that annoying website exit popups are bad for trust, visits or search rankings?

  • When a website puts an exit popup that annoyingly tells users they are leaving the site, is there data or research that proves this is bad for the site in terms of trust, visits, or search ranking? Want to prove that it is bad site design to put this type of function on a website through hard numbers rather than anecdotal opinion.

  • Answer:

I can tell you from first-hand advertiser/aggregator/proprietor experience that the financial benefits of keeping the consumer on the site outweighs (at least, financially) any adverse effect of trust/seo. In fact, companies Upsellit, Kenzei, Intellichat, Delfin Management (virtual smart agent) exist solely to provide this technology, because the customer retention/value augmentation is THAT valuable.

You should speak to your marketing and product teams to understand the value of such an insight. They'd pay a fortune for it. However, the harsh reality is that, YES, it sucks from an experience stand point and hence the response rate on such surveys is insignificant. Here's a shameless plug: http://blog.webengage.com/2013/11/06/introducing-leave-intent-based-targeting-now-convert-users-exiting-your-website-pounce-on-bounce/ A cool new way to annoying less and doing more with users "about to leave" your website. We call it "Leave Intent" targeting. We are delivering value to over 15,000 websites globally. Disclosure: I work for WebEngage

There is no existing data to prove exit overlays hurt bounce rates, engagement rates, or anything of the sort. Most case studies I've seen show quite the opposite...that few user complaints are received and that bounce rates are not affected. Here's a recent one I http://saw...http://danzarrella.com/my-data-shows-email-popups-work-and-dont-hurt.html#
