What pushed Uber to create UberTAXI (book taxis with the Uber App)? Why is this feature is not present in France or other countries?

  • In France, taxi drivers are very mad against Uber (http://techcrunch.com/2014/01/13/an-uber-car-was-attacked-near-paris-as-taxi-drivers-protest-against-urban-transportation-startups/). Having a service like UberTAXI should certainly be beneficial to both sides. Instead of this, government officials suggest crazy things like banning geolocation on Uber apps. If this service doesn't exist in France, is it because Uber didn't bother asking taxis to join the app, or because French taxis refuse any kind of technological change in their profession?

    In France, being a taxi driver is a regulated job with very high costs to enter the market. They are also united into very powerful job unions and do not hesitate to protest by blocking the road when something goes wrong. Many political men and women tried to give a bit more freedom to this market but none of them really succeeded by now.
