Is it unfair to test chemistry knowledge on the IIT-JEE? Why or why not?
-
My point is , most fields hardly require knowledge of chemistry anywhere or even if they require it is very less. Say i want to pursue CS but i would be tested on Chemistry and they wont ask me CS , so a person who already knows lots of things in CS may be rejected and a person who doesn't knows to turn on a CPU can be into IIT ! I am not saying to include CS in place of chemistry in JEE but reservation of few students from olympiad sector (say only top 4 students of Olympiad team of IOI can select their IIT or top 20 campers, same could be done for IMO,physics & chemistry olympiad for their respective branches) This would give talented students liberty to pursue their the subject they are passion about and consequently improve India's Olympiad performance and also add to gems of IIT-JEE . And on a second half what can i/we do to introduce such a system , this system isnt new its already flourishing in Iran & China and partially in US and other countries too!

Answer:
My personal opinion. Chemistry IS required for JEE JEE is not just about how will you can think, how fast can you apply your logics. It's also about how well can you remember things. That's where chemistry comes into play. I believe that you should have a certain level of memorization skills because when you get into IIT, you will realize that a lot of things(formulas, equations etc) are supposed to be memorized. We are not given the proof and are just told to remember it. Now suppose you have "NO" habit of memorizing things, then in such a case you will face difficulties. I am a CS student. And I believe that chemistry is important(although I scored the least in JEE chemistry). Another argument is that being an engineering student, you are supposed to have a basic knowledge of all the scientific disciplines. This is the reason Biology is introduced across various IITs in the first year. Who knows which subject might spark your brain and you might end up doing wonders!! So, to conclude, I would say that YES chemistry is important for JEE

IT is very very unfair, but more importantly stupid. All this for the very simple reason that chat chemistry has absolutely no application in any branch except for one, that is chemical engineering. To deal with that they can have a separate chemistry test for applicants of chemical engineering branch, just the way they have a test apart from IIT-JEE for architecture students.
