How do you shut down Chrome OS?

Will Google integrate BumpTop into Chrome OS?

  • BumpTop is a personalized 3D desktop interface (GUI metaphor) which was purchased by Google in May 2010. In the December 2010 Chrome OS announcement, the company did not mention any desktop or file system for the OS. Will the lack of a true desktop metaphor functionally inhibit Chrome OS? If so, what are the odds that Google will integrate BumpTop into the OS? Were there other reasons for that acquisition? This is a follow-up question to .

  • Answer:

BumpTop already is, in a sense, integrated into the iOS.  But it's in Android Honeycomb, not Chrome.  It premiered last week at CES:   The gestures, 3D functionality and the thinking behind some of the integrations are distinctly BumpTopian.

I believe that people like the simplest possible solutions. BumpTop was always a rather over the top band aid to another problem. The real problem is the desktop metaphor for the vast majority of people. A simple test of this is iOS; If one was to have BumpTop on the iPhone what would you use it for? Answer: Nothing, it's not needed, and never will be for 99% of people who use those devices.

Chrome OS is all about the web, I believe there won't be any filesystem browser. But that purchase may find a home on Android, most probably in its tablet incarnation.

I felt that the most reliable speculation at the time was that the purchase was more about the touch gestures than about the 3D desktop metaphor. But I haven't heard much about it since then.

Imagine a version of BumpTop running within Chrome that, instead of a desktop, gives you 6 planes to use as web browser windows within the one window of Chrome. That'd be great.
