What are some of the best free resources for Web development?

What free or inexpensive online resources are there to teach yourself web development?

  • I'm currently learning Python by reading the online version of "Learn Python the Hard Way" by Zed Shaw and learning JavaScript through courses on http://Codecademy.com.  They are free and great!  Are there any other online resources to teach yourself web development?

    "Dive Into Python" is a great free ebook on learning Python. The best I've come across. The author has recently "removed himself" and all is work from the internet so you'll no longer find the book at it's official site. Being a public domain resource, however there are plenty of mirrors and backups of it around the web :) Also, if web applications written in Python is what you're going for, look into the Flask micro framework (http://flask.pocoo.org) I'm currently using it and I can't say enough nice things about it! Hope that helps...

http://www.w3schools.com -> I was in 4th grade when I stumbled upon this simple tutorial website, in a weeks time I was able to develop simple websites and host them in Yahoo Geocities. Totally Free! ..  Those were the days.. Anyways that was old school, times have changed a lot... Now I would recommend you go for Google's Tutorials found here -> http://code.google.com/edu/ They have nice tutorials on Python basics, Python Advanced, Web Programming, Web Security and Google APIs. And host your practice python apps in Google App Engine.

Search for "web programming courses" in iTunes podcasts. A great place to start in that fashion would be to search: "Harvard Extension School's Computer Science E-75: Building Dynamic Websites." https://www.cs75.net/Main_Page <-- The class's online references, syllabus, etc. Stanford and MIT have lectures for free online as well. A Google or iTunes search should get you to those as well.
