How to make this special effects for a video?

How can I make a daytime video look like it was taken at night using video effects in a video editing program?

• I'm able to use VideoPad, Microsoft movie maker, and lightworks, but if you have any (free) software to suggest, please do so. I would like to make a short video clip filmed during the day outside look like it was dark outside and taken at night. Obviously, we will not have the sky in the shot. What effects and editing tools should I use to accomplish this?

  Assuming the lighting is set up in a way where you don't have day-like hard shadows in your video, try this: Add a lot of blue Partially desaturate Darken A Final Cut "Day for Night" plugin that I've tried does just this, and it's somewhat okay, although I think it goes over the top with the blue.
