How should you remove elastomic paint over stucco?
-
I'd like to change the color of my house. It is a stucco house that was painted with elastomeric paint. I've read that you shouldn't paint over elastomeric paint because of vapor permeability requirements for the stucco underneath. What's the recommended way to remove the paint first then?

Answer:
You can't, without damaging the stucco. Scrape, sand, wash, and seal like you would before any exterior paint application. (Use acrylic latex caulk, preferably.) Use a high quality flat acrylic exterior paint, for better adhesion. Paint right over the old stuff. Flat acrylic latex has a very high permeability rating, and will not inhibit the vapor transfer that stucco coverings require.
