How to store large ordered data?

The last time you walked out of an Apple Store, did you feel grateful for the opportunity to have patronized it?

  • Three data points to consider. The day I bought my iPhone, I called the store first. They said they might have exactly one left and that I'd better come quickly to the store to get it. I went there and did get the iPhone. The day I bought my iPad, I walked into the store and asked to buy one. The woman at the counter said that they might have exactly one left and that she needed to go in back and check. A few minutes later she emerged with the iPad, which I bought. The day I had my MacBook repaired, I showed up at the scheduled Genius appointment time. The Genius looked at it and said I'd have to leave it for a few days while they ordered the part and did the repair. I said this was OK with me, but then he said he might have the part in stock and might be able to do the repair during my appointment. He took my computer in back and emerged ten minutes later, having completed the repair. I don't doubt that Apple products and services are in high demand. But I find it hard to believe that I'm so consistently mere moments ahead of supply depletion.  Help me fortify my conspiracy theory that it's all theater.

I don't know.  But I do know that Steve Jobs is probably the only figure in the history of tech who regularly promises LESS battery life than his products actually deliver.  So I would not be surprised if "under promise, over deliver" is also exercised in the stores.  But I'd love to hear from someone who has worked there.

Your experience was much different than mine, possibly because I wasn't in the market for new hardware. Regarding the whole "might have X in stock" phrase, they probably don't have a LOT of inventory, it moves quickly, and in a store where many staff/techs are working concurrently it's possible someone else will sell the remaining inventory while you're on the phone. My experience was negative because I don't like being condescended to because I wanted to repair my MacBook instead of replacing it. They were so busy informing me that it is normal for batteries to swell up if not replaced as soon as battery life declines, that they "forgot" to mention a recall for faceplates (?) made of substandard plastic that tended to crack. An independent Mac repair shop not only served me respectfully but got my cracked faceplate replaced for free. Part of why I wanted to keep my older MacBook (2007) is that you *can* replace components, unlike most or all of their current offerings.

1. If you ask to buy something by phone, maybe they want to scare you so you can get there as quickly as you can. 2. When they repaired your MacBook maybe they wanted you to feel so satisfied with their work.

You have been consistently lucky. Either that or you bought the product more than 2 or 3 weeks after it was debuted. May be even a month after it became available.

Yes I enjoyed my experience in the store.  When I called about the availability of the iPad about a week after it came out, the person on the phone was non-committal about the length of the wait in line to get one, and how many were in stock other than to say that they got a full shipment or something along those lines (it has been a while so I've forgotten what was said exactly). However, I do think it was fair to not estimate the time it takes to wait in line. After all, I showed up and there were 2 people in front of me, and by the time I got served 10 minutes later, the line had 20 or 25 people in it.  So yes I do see under promising, over delivering, and I like that.
