How Is My GRE-Tunneled Packet Being Routed?

Is it possible to forward an incoming IP multicast packet out of a specific interface using iptables rules if the incoming packet already has a TTL > 1?

  • The incoming interface is a GRE tunnel interface . I am trying to send it out of another interface say eth0. The tunneled packet has the same source subnet as the eth0.

  • Answer:

TTL (total time to live) is a little misleading concept. It actually contains the maximum number of hops that packetĀ  can travel before reaching destination. in earlier days, 1 hop takes nearly 1 second so it got its name as TTL. Ideally TTL value is 64. That is after 64 hops, packets cannot be forwarded.
