How Can I Block Ads On Google Chrome?

Is Google's new Chrome extension (block content farms) the right solution to remove spam results from Google Search?

  • Google has just released a Chrome extension which crowdsources content farm detection and blocking ( http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2011/02/new-chrome-extension-block-sites-from.html ). Is this the right solution for content farm blocking? Since it can be used to block any domain, how is Google going to recognize content farms from other heavily blocked domains (which are not necessarily spamming ones)? Would it allow for downranking by mean of trojans simulating Chrome's blocked domain list?

    I think it is OK, because it is user based. Don't forget it is only one metric. If everyone pulls together online and says block "http://microsoft.com", it doesn't mean that http://microsoft.com will vanish from Google's results. User input is good and it really raises the standards to create quality content, as opposed to content only for search engines. Plus, this makes it more personalized. If person A and  person B find your site offensive, they can block it, but if everyone else loves it Google isn't going to remove you from the web. As far as I know, the toolbar is both optional and secure. Hope this answers your question.

I don't think it's the right end-solution, but it might be a good step to figuring out which way to go.  It will be a good test to determine if it makes sense to include user input into their ranking algorithm.  I would worry about competitors trying to affect their competitors rankings in this way (if it did end up becoming part of the algorithm).  Something definitely needs to be done about all the "craptent" on the Internet.  Getting to hard to find info that you need quickly.
