  The technologies that have emerged from both are too plentiful to number. From defense, of course, there's the internet (which was originally called the Arpanet). Encryption, GPS, the technologies used in automobile airbags, materials used in transportation technologies, microwave ovens, refrigeration, fuel technologies, batteries, even watches are all military inventions. In fact, you can go as far back as horse stirrups, time zones, weather, and mapping. Modern emergency medicine and trauma medicine was born from war-time medic care. And don't forget processed foods. Oh, another thing: performance reviews (used to assess skills necessary for battle-field promotions when commanding officers were killed or injured). From finance, there's modern economics and accounting systems. Computers. Railroads and shipping. Trade in general. Distribution models, including modern warehousing and inventory techniques (which include the systems that give Wal*mart and Costco their pricing advantages), pricing models in general, and if you want to go way back, the number system, basic world exploration, tobacco and spices like saffron. Plus the Gold standard, the advancement from the feudal system to modern commerce, and Paypal. :)
