Should I get coaching or study by myself for the IIT JEE?

I would like to mention two things:- 1) Your selection in entrance examination depends on the hard work (rather smart work) that you put into.(Coaching is merely for guidance) 2) Consistency in preparation is the key to success. Joining a coaching will have following advantages:- As you have mentioned you are in a habit of procrastinating things, joining a coaching will be a good option (provided you don't have any financial/other constraints). It will help you in being consistent during your preparation. Availability of a subject expert who can clear your doubts. You will remain in a competitive environment which will provide a driving force/motivation for performing better. If you are still unable to join a coaching institute, go for at least two national level test series and appear for the tests "religiously".

I saw the point about procrastination and so I will suggest you go for coaching. Join an institute which is near to your home. Don't stay at hostel, travel everyday from home. Also don't go for weekend programs, apply for weekday program (5 days a week) so that you can keep the weekend for self study. I guess classes would be from around 8 to around 5. Keep free time for resting and dinner till 9. And study from 9-1 at night. Sleep till 7. Don't forget to consult your previous notes (earlier coaching) from time to time and don't waste your time chatting with other students about the hottest girl in class, remember you have dropped an year for a purpose. If you left coaching because you felt it didn't benefit you , I find no reason for you to join a coaching again. Just because everybody else is doing something it does not necessarily mean its correct.Look at the statistics , about a 1000 students are absorbed by popular coaching classes every year on an average but how many actually make it to the IIT's ?Coaching classes can guide and teach you but finally you have to do the hard work to learn , you have to build your concepts because in the end its self study that matters the most .  If you think you need some guidance , vigilance and all India bench marking to enhance your preparations you can go for a self study tool like a distance coaching .Many of my students have bought either aakash itutor or Byju's learning tablet ,both are equally good but Byju's have ADAPTIVE LEARNING feature installed and are currently available for much lower prices and since I bought their course a month ago I can safely say that you will benefit a lot from them. It's better to go for coaching than self study especially for IIT_JEE. There are many thigs you can handle on your own. which needs a person to help you. It's almost 14 lack students are competing for this exam. You need a proper preparation and time management to achieve what you want.

Coaching definitely reduces the time of preparation. That being said some do crack IIT-JEE through self study but the numbers are few and far between. Also mock exams help in understanding the exam better.
