Are server loads the bottleneck for Facebook, Google, and others to offer users more advanced features?
-
Do some websites purposely offer basic features to reduce server loads?

Answer:
This is nothing new. Scaling inherently makes everything more difficult. The bounds of what you can do have always been defined by limits on Disk, IO, CPU, etc. But it all comes down to what projects a company prioritizes. If a company really, really wants to do something, they'll find a way to make it reasonable (reduce IO requirements, precompose media, etc.). The question is how much they want to do it. [within reason]
