Software salary in India after working 15 years in US?

I have been working with an IT MNC in India for 3 years after my graduation (stream: software testing). Right now I have an offer to join a public sector bank as a probationary officer. Which would be better?

  • I am really confused as I am not sure what exactly I want to do with my life so I opted to accept whatever job comes to me.  IT Pros : onsite offer, salary, posting in metros cons : security/stability/no respect Bank job pros : security/stability/good promotion cons : salary (compared to IT) Apart from these, which career would be the best as a long-term career option?

While I can't decide for you, I'd like to add some more points you can ponder over: Do you like your current job? This is not related to what you're getting paid etc, but rather a subjective question. Are you enjoying it and having fun in general? A bank - any bank - is boring. As someone who has a lot of friends and family working with banks and similar institutions, I know for a fact that much of the work of a PO is boring with a capital B. What are the growth prospects at your current job? Do you see a promotion or salary hike in the near future? How far would your testing position take you in this company? Banks also have a structure for promotions but this is less based on performance and more on seniority (government banks especially). I don't like such structures and so I would never choose a bank myself. Finally, what are your life goals? You're probably gonna marry and have kids, maybe you wanna travel around etc. a bank job makes it quite easier. Plus, you can get education and other loans easily if you have a bank job - banks love bankers ;). So those could be some factors that you consider when choosing what to so from here. There's no sure shot answer here though - you won't really know until you make the leap :)
