Should I study computer science or software engineering?

Which would be a better course to specialize in for mobile and web development after a B.E in computer science for a master's in the U.S.: software engineering or computer science?

  • I am in a similar kind of Dilemma!! Mobile & Web Development are more industry oriented courses so you really can't anticipate that they will be taught profoundly in Computer Science curriculum.Coming to Software Engineering it is more about the Software Methodologies, Software, Modeling , etc., which applies to every form of software development not necessarily Mobile & Web. However, few institutes like Northeastern teach Web Development under the Software Engineering concentration which comes under MS in Computer Science. Finally!   The way I see it  Mobile & Web Development are the part of Information Technology. Rochester Institute of Technology has a curriculum for Web Development under MS in Information Sciences & Technology. Having said that, I don't know whether we should stick to classical Computer Science and then move to mobile & Web Development or should we study these courses in the first place under Software Engineering or Information Technology.

Hi, The answer is very simple. You are making it too much complicated. 1) If you are really interested in Mobile and Web Development do not go on titles like 'Software Engineering' or 'Computer Science'. Follow these simple steps. Search for Universities having Mobile and Web Development as a course or related courses for individual. Go through the index or a summary of each course. The next task is to see for 'Research Work' for this area in that university.      If all good for you then go for it. Don't give a second thought. 2) But if you are worried more about the difference between "SE" and 'CS' course more than your area of interest then for safe side opt for "CS". So what I am saying is that, if you want to do your Master's in "Mobile and Development" only. Go for the best. Don't go on titles. But if it is just that you want to work on it in the future, then go for "CS" on safer side.
