How to do internship in Google in India?

What are the things a passionate, hardworking student from a three tier college in India can do to get an internship at tech giants like Google, Facebook, or Microsoft?

  • I'm a Computer Science sophomore in a three tier college in India. I'm good at competitive programming (Yellow on Top coder) and recently started contributing on github. I've made bunch of Android and Chrome apps. Till this summer I will be having few personal projects under my belt. My aim to land in an Internship at a tech giant in 2015. I've read lots of answers on quora about the same issue. Can some one advice me what else should I do in order to grab an Internship at a tech giant. I'm ready to work very hard but I don't have any one to guide me. In other words I'm in need of some one who can guide me as what to do and what not to do. I feel glad if some one can help me out of this issue and guide me. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for A2A. Yellow on Top Coder - Great. You are already off to a good start. Getting an intern at "tech giants" after sophomore year is difficult. You might not be able to make significant contributions to the company. If you have learned things beyond your academic curriculum and if you are good (rather great) at coding you can still get one. Apart from working as hard as possible here are a few things : First of all make sure you are visible online. If anyone wants to find more about you make sure they can find everything (technical) about you - your projects, sample codes, publications (if any), past experiences, courses, etc. A Linked In account is a good place to start. The main idea is to make sure your skills don't go unnoticed. GitHub contributions also do help. Many people prefer to look at your past work (your codes) rather than your resume. Secondly, Keep a decent GPA. Although most companies do not care much about your GPA if your interviews are good. But, for getting an interview GPA's do help. Companies like Adobe has high GPA cutoffs too. If you have good "skills", GPA will compliment it but Low GPA doesn't mean you have no chance at all. Thirdly, Projects and Programming. Make sure you do good projects. You will learn a lot. They will help you in understanding real-life problems. You will learn to work under pressure and complete the task within a deadline. They will also help you find your area of interest. Fourthly, Referrals are a great way to secure an internship. If you know someone working at a tech giant go ahead and ask them for a referral. If you are good, they might help you and send potential recruiters your way. Finally, Keep applying. Apply for many as many good companies as possible. Even if you want to intern only at a selected few do not forget to apply for others too. Your application will improve over time. Remember it's always the best application (not the best candidate) that gets an interview. So make a nice cover letter for each company you apply. Make appropriate changes to your resume. Make sure your profile resonates with the vision of the company you are applying too.

Microsoft takes students as interns after the third year of engineering. There is an interview process to get in, and once your internship ends, depending on your performance, they'll decide whether or not to interview you for a PPO (Pre Placement Offer i.e a job offer) and give you one based on the current interview + internship performance.Send me your resume, I can refer you :)

You know what is just as important as having the right skill set? It is knowing the right people and the right people knowing you. You are yellow in TopCoder, that's great. Go to ACM-ICPC regionals, get a great rank there and network with other coders who are there. You will meet a lot of people from IITs who get internships/jobs at top notch companies that you mentioned. Make professional contacts with them. They will be more than happy to refer you. And once you get an interview nobody cares about where you study, you will be judged solely based on your skill. PS: To give my answer credibility, I interned at Facebook and know of a fellow intern who got in through a similar process as above.
