Where do you stand on california motorcycle smog (S.B. 435?

How much does a smog check cost in California?

  • I have a 2003 honda civic coupe and am needing to pay registration renewal. It says SMOG certification required as well, but I feel like I just got a smog check. How much is the SMOG check on top of the $99 registration renewal. And why the hell do I need a SMOG check again? RIDICULOUS!

  • Answer:

I did this a couple of months ago and paid around $35 for the test and $10 for the certificate.  The garage sends the test results to the DMV electronically while you're there. It may feel like you just got a smog test, but if the DMV is asking you for one, you can rest assured that enough time has passed to make the old test invalid. The reason you need a smog test is to provide reasonable assurance to the state that your vehicle is not contributing more than its fair share of pollution to our already-smoggy beautiful state.  I don't think it is a unreasonable request. I guess it is your right to complain about the ridiculous nature of the test, but the bottom line is that without it, you may not register your car.  Drive an unregistered vehicle and the consequences (when you get caught) will be much worse that the cost and inconvenience of the test.

Depends on where you go.  Sometimes at a test only place it can be as cheap as $9.95 (plus certificate, which is usually $10), other places it can be more. You need to have your car regularly tested to make sure it meets the specs for your year vehicle, and to make sure all the smog equipment is working correctly. If you "just got a smog check" you should know how much a smog check costs, which kinda makes your question moot.

It depends on the car. Pre-1995 cars and trucks tend to cost more because they don't have the modern onboard diagnostic system (OBD II) that allows for computer diagnostics. There's always a coupon; never get a smog check without it. Watch the weekly circulars in the mail and check the ads in the newspaper when your renewal date approaches. Some cities have a local coupon book that comes out once a year. Look up the websites for smog check stations and see if they have a printable coupon.
