International Relations or Cultural Anthropology?

UBC or University of Calgary? What university would you recommend for a highly capable transfer student doing an Anthropology/International Relations Undergrad Degree with plans of going to Law School?

  • Answer:

Hmm, well depending on why you don't want to be at McGill. UBC  is huge.  There is an extremely active community centered on and around campus, so you never have to set foot anywhere else.  UBC is quite demanding regarding entrance requirements and  performance standards.  But it's in Vancouver!  Which is just about the  opposite of Montreal in terms of climate and atmosphere.   I love  Vancouver and UBC is a great school.  But it's not for everyone and it's  expensive to live here.  Oh, and we have beaches. UofC  is smaller, less selective (a little bit). The city itself is smaller  and extremely friendly, if a little bit on the red-neck side -- you can  regard that as part of your education.  Lower cost of living.  The university itself is not in the center of town, a little bit out of the  way but well served by transit. UofC law school is considered good.   The oil industry makes for a very lively risk-taking environment.  The oil industry itself is very international in its outlook.  Weather is better than Montreal. Probably you'd get more exposure to international-type people at UBC since you say you are interested in international relations.  That's just my opinion, not a fact.  UofC does have many international students as well. Anglo-Francaise politics are not part of life out here in the west.
