Why is the advertising of cigarettes banned in most countries, and the advertising of alcohol not?

  • It has always baffled me that the adverting of alcohol is permitted in many countries- including South Africa, yet the advertising of cigarettes has been banned for many years. I've never heard of someone climbing into a motor vehicle and killing someone, because they weren't able to drive due to smoking a cigarette. The abuse of alcohol destroys families.

Overall, I think the key reason why tobacco ads are being progressively banned is that there is no such thing as moderate and harmless consumption of cigarettes. One cigarette is already harmful, whichever way you put it. With alcohol, you can have moderate and harmless consumption because our bodies, if reasonably healthy, are wired to process a moderate amount of alcohol. Hence, banning alcohol advertising altogether would destroy an industry that can and in a lot of countries does have a very healthy profile (i.e. France). Ad restrictions and limitations exist in counties where alcohol abuse has been inherited historically - i.e. Russia where advertising of Spirits is banned from TV but is allowed in Print and online. Then there's lobby of course. In different countries tobacco and alcohol industries have historically enjoyed various degrees of power. This is hard to penetrate as a lot of the conversations happen behind closed doors.
