How To Play Bass Guitar?

Is it advisable to learn the bass guitar without knowing how to play an acoustic guitar?

  • I have always been fascinated by the bass guitar, but have never learned to play an acoustic guitar (Was always busy playing my keyboard). Wanted to know if playing the bass guitar without having the knowledge of an acoustic guitar is a possibility.

  • Answer:

its actually do-able... Its just the Chords you need to know.. if the song is in the Chord A then you need to know where the chord ABCDEFG is on the bass guitar. everthing else is your dedication, passion, hardwork and Bass guitar.....

Since you play the keyboard I'll assume you already have a good amount of musical knowledge (Notes, Scales, Chords). You can start out with the bass guitar directly. The techniques you use on a bass and on an acoustic guitar can be quite different. Off the top of my head I can think of these two: Unlike an acoustic guitar, you probably wont be playing too many chords on the bass, especially not early on If you decide to learn fingerpicking (which you should definitely try, completely different sound compared to a pick), the styles to fingerpick on an acoustic guitar and a bass are generally different. However, as a keyboard player its going to take you some time to get the hang of playing a guitar/bass. I've always found the bass a little harder to play because the frets are so wide. You could start with an acoustic guitar for a while just to get used to it and develop basic technique, but I don't think its a necessity. Learning to play an instrument just needs practice and dedication Learning to be a good musician, that takes something. P.S. - , don't forget that the bass will be bigger than you again! :D

They are different instruments not variations of the same instrument.  If you learn guitar as a prelude to learning bass, you are setting yourself up to be "the worst guitar player in the group, so he plays bass". Which is how you get terrible bass players.   If you want to learn bass, learn bass. Get into the qualities of bass that make it unique and awesome.

Not advisable. Even if you know musical theory, to get a clear picture about the guitar, It's best to learn the basics on an acoustic guitar and then move onto Bass. Just three months with acoustic and then move onto Bass. It'll be better this way. All the best.

Stop thinking of the electric bass as a guitar with four strings and start looking at it in terms of a variable tone drum.  That's a better analogy for what purpose it serves in a band.  You don't need to know how to play the guitar in order to be a successful bassist.  You will naturally pick up enough guitar knowledge to read the guitarist hands for chord shapes by just playing with other people.  Spending too much time learning guitar will not help you become a better bassist.  If you want to play the bass you should focus your energy on that goal.  Do yourself a favor.  Take some private lessons to get started off on the right foot.  Good luck!

It’s perfectly fine. You’ll learn when you get more experience that just because both instruments have frets and strings, it doesn't necessarily mean that they are similar. I learned the bass with no prior musical experience, and I like to think I've come a long way from when I started. Therefore, it’s perfectly okay to learn bass without experience in acoustic. These two instruments actually play very differently too. From what I've seen, lots of acoustic music is based around chords, and bass playing is mostly finger- picking and slap. They are two totally different instruments, so you’ll do fine regardless of which one you pick.

no....its not at all required....bass guitar is somewhat different than playing an acoustic one...without learning the acoustic one also you can be a great bass player...so no 2nd thoughts ..if you wanna be a bass guitarist ,its high time you grab one
