How to become a Cardiovascular surgeon?

I want to become an open heart surgeon when I grow up. Do surgeons or residents have any advice or any links to their biographies on how they became a surgeon?

  • I am a high school freshman (9th grade). Two weeks ago, I encountered something that I hope would change my life***. I was at a store when someone all of a sudden just slumped to the ground and didn’t move. People were going frantic and then all of a sudden, out of nowhere a man went to the person that fainted and began doing CPR. He also put his hands together and hit the fainted person’s chest pretty hard. The fainted person (let’s call that person John Doe) and the doctor ( Doctor). John Doe didn’t open his eyes or moved a muscle and so Doctor quickly ran around the store and grabbed a clean bag and put the bag in John’s mouth. I couldn’t see well because other adults were blocking my vision. The ambulance quickly came and squeezed the bag every 3-4 seconds and then they were out of sight. When everyone dispersed, I went up to Doctor and asked if he was a doctor and he said that he was an open heart surgeon. I was wowed and told me that I would become a great open heart surgeon someday. Now, I knew that wouldn’t be true unless I studied really hard and go to a good university like Johns Hopkins. For two weeks I searched online how I can begin studying, went to Barnes and Nobles ( a bookstore). I couldn’t find anything on really how or where to begin. I know that I am in highschool and that GPA is really important and finals are in 4 days, but I really want to at least know where I can begin. I know the basics of the heart like the 4 chambers the veins and arteries that lead in and out of the heart. But really, I still don’t know where to begin. Can anyone give me a brief biography on how they became to be a doctor/surgeon? Thank you so much! ***Why did I say that this would hopefully change my life? I wanted to become a computer engineer and already know C++ and Java. I do cs competitions, have stacks of computer programming books, did a sceince fair project on algorithms, etc. I was committed into being an engineer but I slowly found out that I wanted to become a surgeon and save people. I wanted to help people when they get a heart attack all of a sudden at a mall or whatnot. I can imagine myself as a surgeon and saving a new born baby with a heart problem. And so, this is why I have said this would hopefully change my life.

  • Answer:

Not a sugeon but hopefully by the time you get through med school open heart surgery will be a thing of the past. Focus your creative dreams on developing a less destructive method to preserve life. Bone saws and bailing wire are too inelegant for one who can reanastamose spiders web

No to discourage you, but becoming a Cardiac surgeon is a long and hard path, This works out different ways in different countries, but basically you will be looking at, 1 - A basic medical undergraduation 2 - A post graduation or specialization in surgery 3 - A sub specialization in cardiac or cardio-thoracic (CT) surgery. You will be looking in the range of 10-12 years or so, after which you pay off your debts for ~5 years and then start making money. Plus CT involves long and gruesome hours and less sleep, plus due to the critical nature of the patients you handle, you are bound to lose a few, and may face any litigation based on them. Also i've heard among physicians, cardiothoracic and neurosurgeons have high marriage failure rates and suicide rates, mainly because of the stressful jobs they have. (Maybe not true!!) These are the Negatives, rest are all the positives. Be sure you are okay with the negatives, then we can discuss the positives :)
