Welcome to the wonderful world of Medical Billing & Coding! In short, the sky is the limit. You can start out as a coder, get certified in several specialties, and increase in pay every year based on performance (FAST entry with little or NO mistakes and great follow up / appeals ability) and you could retire after 35 / 40 years with money in the bank and your toes in the sand. Another option is to move into a supervisor role, management role, director of a billing facility, and then into an executive position within that company. All of this is possible in our company depending on the drive, skills, and performance of the individual. The third option is to learn all you can, save lots of money and strike out on your own with a medical coding a billing venture that YOU own. The capital investment is steep if you don't want to be a distributor of someone else's product, but it can be done. To answer a question you have in a comment, we have both men and women coders. I took an alternative route into the industry. I come from the "business world". My role as the "Director of Business Development" is more of a client liaison / senior account manager for all accounts kind of position. So that type of transition is another option. Follow the rules, keep your integrity, gain social skills, and be FAST and ACCURATE. Good luck with whatever path you choose!

There's a new energy in the medical coding field specially after the transition from ICD-9 to ICD-10 (which brought in a whole gamut of data analysis). Couple this with the surging field of Medical Auditing and you've got a very practical (and lucrative) offshoot of medical coding designed around quality control supervision and implementation.Going forward, your success as a medical coder, medical biller or medical auditor comes down to possessing the following: 1. A degree in health sciences, hospital administration or life sciences 2. A nationally recognized certification like CPC or CCS 3. Between 2-5 years experience 4. Ability to think and work outside the box and be ready to advance from physician coding to more specialized and complex specialties like neuropsychiatry coding. You can find more information about medical coding certifications, salary and best cities & states to work here: http://www.medicalcodingworld.com

Iâve had a great career and earned a six figure salary for the past ten years working in billing and coding. In my case I specialized and concentrated on the area of billing and coding compliance in my professional career. I taught coding using the AAPC curriculum which kept my skills as a coder sharp. You can also go into consulting, education, legal and administration.Read a lot, be more familiar with the rules governing coding than the insurance companies. Sign up for government and insurance company news letters. Attend professional career building conventions, workshops and training. You have to work hard and you will constantly need to prove yourself, but it is a rewarding career and can be very lucrative.
