How do I become a network administrator?

Can you become a network administrator with only a certification? If so, what certification?

  • "If  you are starting for networking courses...instead of going directly to  Cisco certs,i would recommend Network+ which is a good source of basic  networking knowledge.Once you are good with it,there are many cisco  certs that you can look at.You can start with CCNA (Cisco certified  Network Associate) and then move to professional cert by taking up  CCNP(cisco certified network professional).Later depending on your area of interest, you can look at Voice or security and then choose the cisco certs thats required for you to be good at it." How long does the process take? How much money does it cost? Is it easier than learning programming? Can you be hired with only these certifications and no AA or BS degrees related to computers?

Other answers

You can be a network administrator (even a great one) without a certification. And a lot of certifications may not make you a good administrator. Anyway, having base knowledge improves your odds of both being hired and perform well. And is mostly the being hired part what is more influenced by the certification. So you should check what certification is more required or valued in jobs offers and pick from there.
