How to integrate Twitter?

How tightly should I integrate a new website with Facebook and/or Twitter?

  • Facebook provides offers the potential for very deep integration to web applications. So much so, that it's possible to integrate almost all aspects of the site with facebook. For example, it would be possible to build features for interacting with other users on a site around a user's Facebook friends -- offering the opportunity to invite friends to the app, share actions with friends, etc. But that leads to the possibility that non-FB users (or those not wanting to link the site to their FB account) may not be able to use the features, or may have more limited functionality. On the other hand, tight FB integration can bring users and can speed up building out social features on a site. What are the pros and cons of integrating tightly? Is it in the end better to build social features into the site directly and not use all that FB has to offer?

  • Answer:

It really depends on the market that your site is catering to.  Facebook integrations don't make sense for anything that is unlikely to involve friends (word processing, tip calculator ... etc). However, Facebook integration can be a very powerful way to acquire and retain users when there is an incentive for users to interact with their friends through your app.  Some examples of successful facebook integrations: http://bit.ly/gVKUM1 http://bit.ly/fkNWri The big con is that you're relying on an external platform with all of the associated risks: http://bit.ly/hIc2iA

One key point to consider when integrating deeply into FB is how much control you maintain over your traffic, and how easily that traffic could be disrupted. It will offer you some internal discussion metrics from which to evolve your desired level of integration.

I would say; use FBconnect, OAuth and Gmail (or just hang in http://www.janrain.com/) to have single sign on between FB etc and your site, then still make a 'normal' website as central system with all features. Then analyze what your audience wants and port that to a FB app linking out to your site for features that the FB app doesn't have. For Twitter; besides OAuth and Tweet this page there is not much to integrate is there?
