Difference between Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.04?

What is the difference between NVidia drivers for Ubuntu and Windows?

  • I have Nvidia GT220. It experienced some overheat, but works fine in Ubuntu. If I start Windows 7, the computer stalls. Though it works in safe mode. Obviously Windows driver implements something which is broken after overheat, but not used in Ubuntu.

  • Answer:

As far as windows is considered the driver development is dictated by the Windows Display Driver Model(google WDDM).  There are various components in the model. Some of the components belong to the OS(D3D runtime, DirectX Graphics Kernel system etc) and some of them to the hardware vendor(User mode driver, kernel mode driver etc.). Here hardware vendor is nVIDIA, amd, intel etc. I am not familiar with the Linux model(I work for the Windows team) but am pretty sure it is considerably different if not entirely.

Thing is Ubuntu and Windows are completely different architecture. Where Windows is resource requiring, Linux based OS is based on low requirement of resources. I guess it starts in Ubuntu is because the driver and OS itself is like a vegetative state for the card where it is alive but has not much ability to think or decide for itself!
