What's the etymology of Berlin's district names ending with -ow?
-
There are number of districts in Berlin which names end with -ow, i.e. Rudow, Treptow, Pankow, Mahlow, and many more. This sounds to me more like slavic rather than german names and I would rather expect these words ending with -ov in german. Can anyone elucidate on the etymology of these names?

Answer:
My understanding is that German names (place and personal) that end in -ow are http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prussian originally. And it is pronounced like /ow/ in English, not like /ov/ in German. This was told to me by a Linguistics Professor from Austria who's last name indeed ended in -ow.
