How can I start my own portal?

We are looking to start a travel portal where travellers can share their experiences and based on that, people can manage their trips. Do you think it can work?

  • As many people visit different places, we are looking to get their travel experiences to showcase on a portal for others to make their own trip. We are also making reviews or ratings for hotels, places, guest houses so people can rate and make their own trips. We will also help in making the best trip at the lowest cost. Will the portal work?

    As others have noted, it can work, but needs to distinguish itself from other travel websites.  As someone who uses these sites as a contributor and traveler, and can see value to a site that combines some of the aspects of Tripadvisor, Lonely Planet, Quora and Couchsurfing.  To me, the potential strength would be a site where I can really follow particular individuals and maybe even connect to them in helping to plan a trip, host and be hosted in various ways, and so on.  Then I might also connect to their connections in other locations and really find a network of like-minded travelers.  What current travel sources lack is the ability to follow the recommendations of one person.  TripAdvisor, for example, provides great aggregate information for reviews and some informational wikis, but not an individual person's guide to a place like London.   Another thing that is lacking is a robust credit and reward system like Quora has.  Ideally, I think such a service might actually also support credits that can be bought and sold, so people could use credits to buy actual services and get paid for offering more complex personalized assistance.  I am not sure exactly what you are thinking, but there is another kind of service that I am looking for that does not yet exist.  Couchsurfing is perhaps closest, but has an emphasis on couch-sharing, which doesn't work for everyone and seems to be mostly a younger crowd than me.

Of course it will work, either it is the the best idea for some travellers who dont want enough luxury but some mind blowing experience of travelling in life. And as you say that some travellers would share there experience, so the people would be able to make a perfect trip. You are going to make reviews of hotels, etc. so the new travellers would know where should they do the right thing. And as a result your idea of making the best trip at lowest cost would also work. And if you are looking at it as a business then according to me it is the best idea with very low investment, but lot of hard work.

It surely will work if you can get people to share their experiences. As not many people are into writing, you might find it tough. You can explore other options such as people uploading their travel pictures (pictures speak volumes) or sharing their tour plan in an easier way (without much to do with writing). Yes, definitely it would work, because the the idea is not in the least new. It has been tried and tested by many other travel portals. Keep the idea, but add a few new innovative strategies to promote your portal. Best of luck. :)

I am say that it is not a great idea as there are many sites already catering to the same. Unless you offer something - it's not worth. Other point is here you are dependent on others blog/post their experience - it means your business model where content is the key, you depend on others which is not a very good business model. Look out something where you drive things.
