What are the differences between a Facebook App and an external website with Facebook Login?

Are there advantages or disadvantages? From the Facebook App point of view a user doesn't need to leave Facebook. However, if the user is not on Facebook he has to access to it. Notifications do they work the same? I am creating a Facebook App however I am not really sure if it is better then having the same app on an external website and use the Facebook login.

For my understant, I always suggest my client to do microsite more than facebook app because I think the microsite is very flexible. You are not stuck in facebook lay out. You also have a friendly URL. User who didn't use facebook can view your web. If you do facebook app, user need to have facebook account to access them. Hope you get any point on my comment. I am not native english. I have more information that would like to share you. But i have any problem to explain to this language. :)
