Before looking at tools etc, start with the basics of motivation (RAMP as I am calling it now). Let me do my job in the best way I can and trust me to do it. Let the challenge of the role increase as my skills increase (and allow me to expand my skills). Give me the ability to interact with others and for the love of god give me something resembling a reason - in most companies that is the mission statement or the core values - as well as the direct good that your job is doing to help support those values and or the continued success of the company. On top of that, if I want it, allow me to grow beyond the role I am in.
