How are the meteorologist jobs?

What other jobs can a meteorologist have besides working on the weather channel?

  • Answer:

I work as an operational meteorologist for the National Weather Service. Our goal is to protect lives and property.  We issue and update forecasts (public, aviation, fire, marine) daily, but our main priority is issuing weather Watches and Warnings. I have friends that work in the private industry as meteorologists forecasting specifically for aviation, transportation, agriculture, and major outdoor sporting events.

I can answer this because I once strongly considered this as a career. You can work as a forecaster / researcher for noaa, the military, a university, or a commodities trading firm. I used to lionize the NHC forecasters when I was in high school. Forecaster Bevin, Forecaster Avila, Forecaster Franklin... Their jokes were priceless during the 2005 hurricane season, in the discussions every 4h for each named storm. The '05 season was insane - and they were always exhausted, overworked and probably very underpaid for their public service.
