How do I get high speed Internet in Canada?

What options are available to get high-speed internet access in Canada where neither cable nor DSL are available?

  • Answer:

Satellite. It sucks, and it's expensive but it's not a 56k modem http://www.galaxybroadband.ca/ http://www.virgintechnologies.com/ Also, if you are technically inclined, I've seen blogs where the local geek gets a T1 line run to their house and use line-of-sight high powered wifi to create a sort of mini-ISP for themselves and their neighbors, thus splitting the cost of the T1 line, bringing it down to a reasonable level. This would be highly location dependent, and dependent on your technical stills but still a cool solution. If I remember correctly it was in Texas where I saw this (GoogleFu isn't turning it up and I didn't bookmark the page)

Other answers

3G, 3.5G, Wimax and in some cases, a satelitte dish to connect to another on a nearby mountain (so no lagged caused by the long distance to a satellite). A mesh is also a possibility. Bandwidth over electrical lines can cause interference over ham radios and for other reasons, it's not often a possibility. But then again, never underestimate the bandwith of a truck full of tapes ;)
