How to install an ipa file programmatically?

Is it legal to publish an ipa file on my own site while still keep it on App Store?

  • I have written a free application and released it on App Store, meanwhile I also want to send it to my friends by publishing the ipa file on my website, and they can install the application on their own jailbroken devices. This may sounds strange, but I just want to know if it is legal or not. Thanks.

    If you want to distribute the ipa to your friends you can add their UDID into the device list on your Apple Developer Mobile Provisioning Portal, then distribute the app to them. Then they can run the app on their device, whether it's jailbroken or not. Apple facilitates this kind of "testing".

Applications developed for OS X can be distributed through the App Store, if selected by Apple, or separately distributed under this Agreement. Unfortunately, no - you cannot publish it on your own website.

I think "legal" is the wrong question. But it probably is a violation of your iOS Developer Program license agreement. I would read that over carefully.
