What software is related to smart grid, home automation and micro grid?

  • I have to pick a software related topic for my Software Engineering class, I am already power Engineer and I am becoming Computer scientist in a little, I love smart grid, micro grid and home automation, what software could be possible be related to these concepts?

    Is this topic something that you are supposed to build for a class project or just to research and to show what is going in that sector? Both of these directions have huge areas.  I'll focus on the former as the latter you can find out from a Google search after we describe some areas for you to explore. In this area it's almost impossible to separate the software from some sort of hardware, whether that's a home's meter or an additional meter like the TED for additional real time analysis and display or an appliance to control its behavior or a plug-load monitor for said appliance (which could also include control). One important area that is going to need to be developed to integrate all of these are user-defined rules for how energy is consumed in their home. For instance: 1) Setting the thermostat to a desired range for any user-defined period. 2) Alerts or automatic shutoff of devices after energy "budget" has been consumed. 3) Automatic powering on/off of devices based on schedule (work, bed, etc similar to today's thermostats) I hope this helps. You collect all that data from your devices and then what do you do with it? You analyze, data mine the heck out of it. You correlate it with what others have collected, etc Find some place to store the data that makes it easy to analyze and then find questions you want to answer. I would look in big data analysis and there look into real-time analysis (apart from the above consumer-oriented stuff). If you could see in real time what people are doing what could you do with that information if you're a power plant, an electrical grid, a energy reseller? Making people save energy is hard since it is so easy to just use it. Come up with software that engages people with their usage and ways to minimize it. Connect them with others to share usage patterns and tips how to safe.
