Where can I get free career counseling?

If I am in my mid 30's with a full career in HR and a masters in industrial/organizational psychology, is it too late to go for either a PhD in counseling psychology or get my LCSW so that I can have a private practice?

  • Is getting an LCSW or an LPC even worth it?

  • Answer:

It's never too late. In my program I had a lady in her 40s starting her second career. The question now is what do you want to do. A PhD is very different from a Masters in Social Work which will let you get an LCSW. You could do a masters program to get LPC licensure as well. Getting a masters means that you will need to go to school for 2 years and then get three years of supervision while working with someone to be able to start your own practice. You can do that right after your PhD. Also, PhD in psychology is different from PhD/EdD in counseling. Either way, check CACREP for accredited programs and also look for information through American Counselor Association. :D Ans yes, it's worth it because you can't really ethically practice without it.

If you want a private counseling practice, then an MSW and the LSCW is likely the best route. If you want a private coaching practice, then you don't need a license, but you should get adequate training.

Your dreams are never too late to come to life. I think it is important to get the right training for LCSW exam. It is so important to study the right material for the test or you could have to retake it. I used the http://www.therapistdevelopmentcenter.com/exam-prep/social-work#social1 and passed the first time. I would recommend it to anyone.

It's never too late. A woman I admire became a psychiatrist at age 50.

No, not even close to being too late.I know several people who obtained (or are planning on obtaining) their PhD’s in the 40’s, 50’s and more and plan to have their next career with them.It is very beneficial to have some life experience when working towards higher level degrees and this might be an excellent time for you to start the process. I hope you enjoy each step in the process.
