What is a database engine?

What is the best donor / wealth database out of Donor Search, Wealth Point, and Wealth Engine?

  • Trying to decide on a database system for searching wealth information on prospective donors at my non-profit.

  • Answer:

I used Wealth Engine and have not been impressed. You can do a better search with Google. I have not used the other two but have heard about DonorSearch.

I work for DonorSearch, so I'm biased. However, two things: 1. DonorSearch screens for philanthropy first, and then wealth, which generates better results when it comes to finding donors who have both the inclination and the capacity to give. 2. We offer a free trial of our online tools and a free test screening of 200 names if you want to try before you buy.

I've been a prospect researcher for a few years and have used all the major providers (DonorSearch, Wealth Engine, Blackbaud). I've found that the top prospects we identify with DonorSearch are typically higher quality than what I've seen with the other providers. Also, I've used their resources when onboarding new prospect researchers. When we have a new researcher join the team, I typically make them read DonorSearch's http://donorsearch.net/prospect-research-ultimate-guide/ on their first day.

Disclaimer: I work for WealthEngine as a senior consultant for nonprofits. The reason I took the position at WealthEngine is, like Randall, I’ve used many solutions out there for donor screening and prospect research and always came back to WealthEngine.I can safely say that NO donor screening or analytics company is 100% accurate. However, we have had external audits done on our ratings and scores and they consistently come back at around 95% accurate up or down one level. That is pretty doggone accurate if you ask me. WealthEngine is constantly enhancing and upgrading its SAS product. It is fully integrated with almost every donor management system with the exception of Blackbaud, our fiercest competitor. I spend my time working with nonprofits of every size and stripe and can vouch for the success that they have using our data if they are properly trained and aren’t data agnostic. To claim that Googling someone is more accurate than WealthEngine isn’t even close to being factual; it’s simply an opinion. We have proprietary algorithms and scores that you can’t find on Google — or cook up on your own unless you’re an experienced statistician. We also have a core data set that’s proprietary to us of 240M+ households in the U.S. This data is updated regularly. So, we take the information we have in the core data file and append our other scores and ratings along with the client’s information and create something that’s really rich and nuanced.
