Does New Blue FX work in Adobe After effects CS3?

What is the best way to work with Adobe After Effects and Final Cut Pro in conjunction?

  • While editing my films I will want to be creating my special effects and compositing in Adobe After Effects, but editing my work in Final Cut. I am wondering what the best way is to transfer files from one to the other with efficiency and no quality loss. Final Cut has a "send to" option but it cannot send to After Effects because it is not an Apple product. It would be convenient though!

  • Answer:

If you're looking to send sequences from FCP to AE for compositing and effects work, Automatic Duck's Pro Import AE is essential. http://www.automaticduck.com/products/piae/ It doesn't support 100% of FCP's effects, but it will create a project using the original media and convert most Motion tab effects and some Effects plug-ins that are cross-app into an AE project sequence that matches your FCP original. Unfortunately there is no workflow plug-in I know of that goes the opposite direction, but as you're more likely rendering out your comps or graphics from AE for import into FCP, this is less of an issue. I agree with Rick that ProRes 4:4:4 is a great way to go for the round trip, especially now that in AE CS5 and later, the gamma issues that previously plagued AE's RGB/YUV conversions have been (mostly) resolved.

I don't know exactly how, but according to an official The Social Network video appeared on Adobe TV, for that feature film Premier was used as an intermediary between the Final Cut Pro timelines and After Effects projects.

I think the best way will be to export your FX shots from FCP to AE in the Apple ProRes 4:2:2 or 4:4:4 codec. Then in AE you can key the shots and add the effects and re-export in the same ProRes codec for FCP. FCP eats up ProRes with no rendering if you use the same codec and the quality is top-notch. Files are big but they need to be.

Another way to send FCp sequences to AE for compositing and effects is to use Popcorn Islands FCP to After Effects Script found here. http://www.popcornisland.com/category/after-effects/ Works great and is 100% Free.  I've used it often with AE CS4.  I generally export my Sequence back out of AE into FCP using Prores 444.
