In brief, scraped plastic is melted and extruded to cylindrical ingots, which can then be used by a RepRap for prototyping: http://www.emeraldinsight.com/journals.htm?articleid=17082798 So feedstock for plastic 3D printing is becoming virtually free! Presumably developers are already working on RecycleBots that can use scrap metal, ceramic, glass, etc.

I have a Cube 3D printer, and the cartridges that are used with it cost $50 each. 3D systems (who makes the Cube) won't disclose how much material is in each cartridge but I figured it out by measuring the weight of the parts I printed. It works out to around 15 cents a gram.
