As the social graph personalizes search engine results, does SEO become less relevant?
-
Search engines, namely google, use facebook, twitter, and +1 data in their algorithms to bubble up more "relevant" results based on the recommendations of a user's social graph. Does this search engine result personalization make traditional/meta SEO less relevant, as it may be possible for each person to have different looking SERPs in the future?

Answer:
I do not believe it makes SEO any less relevant and here's why; 1. First, the true definition of SEO is way more than just meta tags. SEO is the art and science of keyword research. Its website architecture (internal linking, page depth etc). Its effectively using analytics to make decisions. And its backlinking. These skills, plus many others will still be extremely important, no matter how personalized search becomes. You will still need a website with good architecture, good keyword choices, backlinking and an ability to analyze traffic. All the traditional SEO signals still need to be in place, so even if you're getting personalized results, the site is still optimized to rank the best that it can. 2. SEO is also branded search. Its the practice of optimizing your brand, not only your brand's website, but social profiles and other entities around the web, so you 'own' the first page of a search for your brand, and hopefully the entire first page is covered with positive results for your brand. 3. SEO has always evolved and changed with the times. I don't think its social vs. SEO. I believe that social will just slowly become another permutation of SEO. And that more and more, SEO will also be the practice of optimizing with personalized results in mind. 4. Good SEO has always been about quality content, a unique selling proposition, trust and user engagement. A social and personalized layer does not change this fact; that your focus should be on quality content that's useful for the visitor. A GREAT business and a GREAT product can be the best SEO you could ask for. -Dan

SEO will not become less relevant. Wikipedia says: Search Engine Optimization is the process of improving the visibility of a website or a web page in search engines via the "natural" or un-paid ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results. SEO is optimizing your website for search engines as an attempt to make your company or product more visible to potential customers. Regardless of any algorithm changes or personalizations that search engines put in place, there will always be a need to optimize a website to optimally fit new standards and specifications inherited from these changes. SEO will not become less relevant because it encompasses something much more borad than just the current SEO practices. The techniques involved will evolve with any changes made by the search engines.

No, SEO techniques will change but will in no way become irrelavent. SEO is in effect the art of positioning your website so that it is most visible in search results. As with similar arts the techniques and tools may change but the goal of getting your site above that of your competition will still be in place. Only how you accomplish this will change.
