What is substitute of a keyboard for an iPhone?

How is the Nexus One (Android) on-screen keyboard different from the iPhone's?

  • Switching between Nexus One and iPhone I could not help noticing that my typing error rate is significantly lower with iPhone. Both devices have about the same screen size and similar keyboard layout. I am wondering what makes iPhone keyboard superior. Is it layout, for example spacing between the keys? Smarter algorithms to detect what key I am trying to press? Perhaps the hardware? Please share your thoughts and observations.

  • Answer:

The Nexus One has one of the worst touch screen sensor controllers on the market, which is the same one they used to put on the G1 (the first Android phone EVER). This and the less refined predictive algorithms make for a less pleasant experience. I'm currently using Gingerbread on my Nexus One and I'm very pleasantly surprised by how much the keyboard has improved. The word on the street is that Windows Phone 7 has an even better keyboard than the iPhone, but I didn't have the chance to confirm that personally.

I agree that the Nexus One keyboard is significantly worse; and I think that Shane's answer is correct; that the Android keyboard doesn't do the cleverness of the iPhone keyboard, in terms of the larger target areas. is some Apple guff on why their keyboard is the best. I've also moved to Swype, which is significantly faster than the iPhone once you're used to it.

Although not an iPhone, I used to have an iPod touch. I found that the errors made on the Nexus One were high initially, but after I got used to it I was better on the Nexus. When I went back to iOS I made more errors, as I wasn't used to the smaller keys. I have now moved onto the swype keyboard (download link - http://beta.swype.com/ - you need to register), which has increased my typing speed greatly and accuracy is still very high. The great thing about Android is the choice you have with things like keyboards. To answer your questions, the keys on the Nexus keyboard are larger, it doesn't take advantage of multi-touch (which may contribute to the loss of accuracy) and the screen can be less accurate in my opinion.

Although the size of the keys displayed on an iPhone/iPod Touch keyboard does not change during typing, the iPhone's predictive algorithm will subtly increase the "target area" of what it thinks your next keystroke will be. This helps reduce mistypes. As far as I know, the default Android keyboard does not do this. It does, however, display uppercase or lowercase characters on its keys. iOS keys look uppercase at all times. (Personal note: at times, I wish that my iOS keyboard had Swype and that my Android keyboard had a more aggressive auto-predict routine.)

Never been using the Nexus One, I cannot give a complete answer but I read this a while ago : the touchscrewen of the iPhone has been compared and shows a much better accuracy than the Nexus One. That might be one of the reason typing (which requires accuracy, even on the iPhone) might be more difficult.
