What kinds of jobs can you get with a computer science degree?

What kinds of jobs can one get with a computer science degree if one isn't an outstanding coder?

  • Answer:

For all the propaganda about "only hiring rockstars," by definition, the overwhelming majority of people in the field aren't outstanding, including those companies that claim they'd never hire someone merely average. You might need to go on more interviews than the top people, is all.

I've heard that working as a software QA engineer ("software engineer in test"?) has a lower bar, though the company I work for's only QA person is a non-programmer.  I think tech companies generally like to hire programmers even for non-programming roles, however.  One bizdev person and one project manager at the company I'm working for used to work as programmers.  One said he wasn't very good at it.  There are also jobs that are kind of like programming, like being a system administrator or database administrator.

I am not sure what does "isn't an outstanding coder" mean but if someone is an average or below then they usually join consultancy firms where they train you in specific technologies and they find a job for you.

I work as a software analyst at a large corporation (testing, support, customer service, systems admin, and liason to our customers) and I graduated with C's -> horrible coder.  Having taken classes to prepare me for all of that, you pick up most everything on the job.  It's not about the degrees so much as it is about the experience.
