How do I know my fly vest fits?

How can I pull off a black vest at a formal occasion?

  • I am taking a girl to a musical and I got this recent black vest that just fits me so sexily, but I don't know how to pull it off.  I was thinking gray slacks and a blue or red fitted collared shirt made with that slightly shiny material.

  • Answer:

The proper way to wear a black vest at a formal occasion is under a black-tie jacket, with black-tie trousers, patent leather or shined oxfords, a white turn-down or wing collared shirt, appropriate cufflinks and studs, and a black bowtie. A vest or waistcoat should never be worn by itself to a “formal” event, as true formal events have a strict dress code which my friend Peter Marshall chronicles in over 100 pages here http://www.blacktieguide.com/Classic_Components/Waist.htm I somewhat summarize his writings in about 2000 words here http://www.atailoredsuit.com/black-tie-formal-wear.html However, as that it “fits you so sexily” I would just say damn the torpedoes and go as you please and have a wild night with your friends.

Congratulations, I think you're the first heterosexual male to ever combine the words, sexily, slacks and shiny in a description of an outfit. If you do not have a matching black suit to go with your black fitted vest, then I would not bother. Vests on their own have passed the 'in fashion' curve by about 12 months. And by mixing it with other colours and materials, your lady partner will think you're starring in the musical. Keep it simple, ask yourself what would Daniel Craig (007) wear to the opera.

Me, I wear a black or brown leather vest over a dress shirt (no tie) daily to work with denims and boots. So far all the comments have been positive. And no, I'm not a cowboy, I'm a software engineer.

Dude, if you want to wear the black vest, I think you need a bow tie. Black just seems such a somber color for a vest, you need to add a little fun. I would avoid blue. Dark gray slacks are your friend. If you have a toned down vertical striped shirt (def not plaid, lets be clear) that might work too.
