I like to think of unique visitors as the amount of individuals that visited your site in a specific time period.  For example,  if I visit a site 5 times and you visit it 3 times, the website received 8 hits, but only 2 unique people visited the site. New visitors are the amount of people who are visiting your website for the first time in a specific time period.  So, say we are looking at data for December. If I visited the site in October, then I visit the site again in December, I am considered one unique visitor in December, but I am not considered a new visitor.  Since I visited the site in October, I am considered a returning visitor.
