I want to study abroad in Germany.

How much German should one know if they want to study abroad in Germany for their master's in mechanical engineering?

  • I am currently pursuing mechanical engineering from India.I am in first year at the moment.After 4 years, I want to go to Germany for my masters.How much German should I need to learn when I apply for the course? Also, if the course is in English, how much German should one know?

    4 years is a long time. It might be wise to start learning German anyway, irrespective of whether you end up going there or not. Learning upto the B1 level of German would be ideal. It would be incredibly stupid of anyone to think that one doesn't need knowledge of German before applying, and instead, learn the language at the German course offered by universities (it's not mandatory to attend that if you already know the language). A knowledge of German will belp immensely during the application process. While most "Universität"s and TUs don't require fluency in the language, a B1 certificate would be a plus point. Most importantly a B1 certificate will open up many "Facchochschulen" (FHs) to you, many of which offer some excellent programs (nearly all of which require a knowledge of the language).

Depending on the course you want to pursue, and which university you would prefer at that time, you need to be fluent in conversational German at least, and it would really add to your resume if you complete a diploma in German through the Goethe Institut via Max-Mueller Bhavan. Normally, you are gonna have to take one of these German language exams (just like TOFEL or IELTS to English): Test-Daf or DSH. For TestDaf, 1620 is the highest ) maybe do the job. For DSH, 2(3 is the highest) is enough.
