Why doesn't Google put Wikipedia content on a Google website, drive traffic from search and serve ads?
-
Wikipedia appears to make this content freely available. Of course there'd still be links to go contribute going to http://wikipedia.org.

Answer:
There are thousands of websites that do this, including http://Ask.com. A good way to find these is to google a topic plus a quotable, distinctive phrase from the article that hasn't changed. This can often find sources that were plagiarized fully onto Wikipedia. This is the dirty little secret of user generated content that puts bills like SOPA on senatorial desks. Take, for example, Antarctica. Wikipedia is the first citation among 22 million instances. Add a phrase and you discover that the CIA world factbook is cited with large portions quoted wholesale, so Wikipedia itself has lots of "plagiarizations": https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/ay.html Finding those other citations, it's sometimes hard to see who plagiarized who. https://www.google.com/#sclient=psy-ab&hl=en&source=hp&q=antarctica+%22European+maps+continued+to+show+this+hypothetical+land+until+Captain+James+Cook's+ships%22&pbx=1&oq=antarctica+%22European+maps+continued+to+show+this+hypothetical+land+until+Captain+James+Cook's+ships%22&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&gs_sm=e&gs_upl=21600l21600l0l22444l1l1l0l0l0l0l65l65l1l1l0&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.,cf.osb&fp=346cb272ae6cd76f&biw=1237&bih=859 led me to http://wiki.ask.com/Antarctica (cited as source) http://www.psp-ltd.com/antarctica_stat_eng.htm (uncited) http://www.nawafithna.com/topic-28819.html (cited as source) and plagiarization of the Factbook http://ciaworldfactbook.us/antarctica (wholesale site copy, no "citation") http://www.brotherhoodbooks.com.au/BookDetails.aspx?id=336561 (bookspam! see http://www.amazon.com/Antarctica-No-Single-Country-Sea/dp/0831703806/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1328650120&sr=1-1 ) What is the value of this? Click spam? What value does duplication serve/add in its entirety? Is your result going to be found faster than wikipedia? From my perspective, other than spam related profit, there is zero value in doing this.

This may sound obvious, but actually Google serves ads on the very search results page, which is even better. Also Google cannot manipulate search results to appear above Wikipedia in search results because would bring antitrust claims. 1. It will get bad publicity if it did so 2. Wikipedia articles change on a daily basis, if you simply copy the data and put it somewhere it will become stale quickly, if you pull Wikipedia content too aggressively it will put too much constraint on its servers and it will most likely block those IP's 3. Even if Google puts Wikipedia content on some of its own websites, chances are (if Google keeps its search engine fair), a Wikipedia article will still rank higher because so many other web pages reference Wikipedia 4. Google has a competing product in Knol, they will likely focus on their product and try to do better at user generated content
