How to copy dvds on my laptop?

I want to copy my DVDs onto my laptop. Is this a breach of copyright?

  • I know that every country is different but I am UK / EU based.

  • Answer:

This is a copyright infringement in the UK and in pretty much all other EU countries. There is no "Fair Use" exception that lets you do this. As long as you actually keep them on your hard drive and do not distribute them or take your laptop over national borders, your risk is low and the damages you might suffer from being sued are minimized. I'm not sure why you find it necessary to copy your DVDs over, however. Do you not have an optical drive in your laptop?

In the US (which may or may not be helpful to you): This is what is known as "space shifting."  There is a pretty decent argument that this is fair use based on the precedent of "time shifting" but I don't know that its been tested in court. Additionally, however, if your ripped copy on your harddrive is your ONLY copy besides the original then you can call it a "backup" which is clearly fair use. So keeping in mind that I am not a lawyer and that this should not be construed as legal advice, i think you are  on reasonably safe ground.
