What are some career options for an experienced graphic designer (who can't program and hates web work)?
-
If one has no inclination toward programming (it is a very different skill and should not be asked of designers) and finds little satisfaction producing electronic works (web, email, mobile), what other jobs/careers use the classic graphic designer's skill set? â Please limit your answers to making suggestions, rather than debating the merits of web work vs. print or design vs. programming.

Answer:
While I 110% disagree that designers shouldn't be asked to code... I understand where you are coming from too. There's a line that becomes blurry between front end development and design. I enjoy the challenge and happily cross the line but I know plenty of designers like yourself too. Regardless, if I were in your position I would focus upping my game on project management and management in general and try to get into a creative or art director role. This way you get to conceptualize and be creative leading a team but not actually create the final materials or products so if it gets too code-ish you can stay at a high level, focusing on the deliverables / end result. Make sure the goals of the project are met and be sure the work meets with quality standards under your creative guidance. If you held a position like this in a marketing firm you could work on a huge range of projects, it would keep things interesting. You could also work in that capacity for one company and really fine tune the hell out of their brand standards and marketing materials for whatever they sell or produce. I wish you the best of luck!

I share many of your leanings. I suggest finding a good publisher, and designing books, covers, and convention materials. I've been at it for 15 years now, and I'm quite happy with it.

Management roles, photography, video editing, print design, advertising, and sign/vinyl work can make use of your eye for design and creativity. Many shops have people that just do Indesign layouts for magazines and print pieces that require good typography and griding skills that sounds like a good fit for you.

Take a look at advertising, a lot of the big agencies are starting to grow their inhouse teams again, a strong visual designer is a great fit.
