If you were a community manager at a social network site, you'd probably share tips on nurturing community, effective communication, evangelizing your products, dealing with bad apples, etc. What's stopping you from doing that now? Set yourself a goal of skimming and curating at least 2-3 tweets per day on relevant topics, using the appropriate hashtags. Learn who the other people are who have jobs similar to the one you want, and who tweet on the same subject. Retweet, engage, respond to them (as appropriate - don't be 'that guy').

The thing employers want to know is if you can use the tools you'll be using professionally in your personal life. When I tweet or do anything with social media, I conduct myself the same no matter where I am. My advice is be social, be yourself and be creative.
